Keeping Clean and Tidy Potting Areas

Clean the potting area regularly. Frequently sweep up all soil and plant debris and disinfect potting surfaces and tools at least once per year with hydrogen peroxide. If you use any other cleaner, just make sure you remove all cleanser residues before resuming potting activities. Keeping these areas clean reduces the potential for infection or contamination.

CLEANING AND REUSING OLD POTS

Growing plants in clay pots is usually better for the plants than using plastic pots. Clay pots allow better gas exchange because they “breathe” better than plastic pots. This breathability comes from the porous nature of the clay. Over time, this porous nature also allows fertilizer salts to soak into and through the clay pot. Fertilizer salt residue shows up as a white film on the outside of the pot. This salt can be scrubbed off before reusing the pot for a new plant, renewing the pot to its original terracotta appearance.
